Pae Tata, Pae Tawhiti

Pae Tata, Pae Tawhiti: The application of Māori concepts, principles and practices in trauma informed care.

Trauma is a prevalent factor in the lives of Māori that impacts both in the long-term and in day-to-day experiences. This pervasive issue is reflected in the disproportionate representation of Māori across various national and international statistics, including poverty, health deterioration, mental health concerns, substance dependencies, incarceration, and suicide. How trauma is understood and conceptualised critically influences its recognition, assessment, and management.

The programme is developed as an advanced workshop for Māori practitioners who have completed the first Pae Tata Pae Tawhiti micro credential.

This programme is delivered by registered Māori Clinical Psychologists

Pae Tata, Pae Tawhiti: The application of Māori concepts, principles and practices in trauma informed care introduces two new frameworks; firstly, the Au-Intergenerational Trauma Scale (Au-ITS), which provides a means of identifying and discussing intergenerational trauma. We also introduce the TOHU framework, which empowers tāngata whaiora (service users seeking wellness) to identify and address personal and environmental signs (tohu), symbolising either trauma (patu ngākau) or wellbeing, thereby acknowledging their role as mātanga (experts) of their own wellness journey. Then, as a means of facilitating the process of healing from the impacts of intergenerational trauma we present Pae Tata Pae Tawhiti, which was developed by two of the lead authors in 2022.

The framework integrates with the Au-ITS, employing practice steps and tools to address intergenerational trauma among whānau Māori within a healing paradigm.
