Tāmaki Makaurau Regional roopū held their first zui this month with Henare Waru (Regional Lead) and National representative Aaryn Niuapu and his gorgeous pēpi. They selected the topic of Wellness Tools to bring to the hui. Regional lead Henare shared his whakaaro on why the issue of wellness tools was chosen:
“Māori already had our own wellness tools. Tākaro (sport, game, recreational activity) came from our Atua and was handed down to us. Tākaro includes games, waiata and performing arts. We learn through tākaro and tākaro brings whānau together.”
During the hui, whānau talked about their experiences in the rāhui and shared the wellness tools they were using. Aaryn shared the pūrākau (story) of Hine-te-ua. The story gave some understanding and meaning to our experiences and to what is happening around us. The story is a reminder of the knowledge within us and how we can tap into that when we are experiencing distress.
