Each year the Waka Ama Sprint Nationals are held at Karapiro. This year, Ngahuia Ormsby, staff member of Te Rau Ora coached two squads of taitama to compete in this year’s races. If you know anything about Waka Ama, it is a movement and a whānau – for this roopu a brotherhood. The young tane learnt hītori and tikanga, health and water safety and most importantly bonded with their tūpuna awa, Waikato. With such a positive response, whānau and taitama cannot wait to come back and do it all again next year. Ngahuia is an inspiration who hopes Waka Ama becomes a part of the young paddlers identities and well-being as He rongoā te Waka Ama.
