Last year, the Minister of Health announced a wide ranging review to future proof the health and disability system. Hui have been held around the motu for Māori. The expectation is that the review will consider broader issues about roles and functions of district health boards. Nationally and across sectors, Māori have been raising the aspirations for more independence and autonomy when it comes to the development and delivery of services to enable a holistic focus on wellbeing and services in the community. This will require necessary changes to improve value in contractual agreements and equity in contracting practices and greater partnerships with Iwi and Māori, people with lived experience, non-government organisations and other providers.
The Health & Disability System Review panel are expected to provide an interim report this year, with the view of a final report in early 2020. Keep an eye on https://systemreview.health.govt.nz/
