Dr Maria Baker

Ngāpuhi-nui-tonu, Te Rarawa
Pouwhakahaere Matua (CEO)

I am a Māori Health Professional with over 20 years experience and expertise in Māori Health across Govt and Non-Govt agencies, in rural and urban communities with a special interest in Māori mental health. For over a decade, I have dedicated a career to building and advancing Māori capacity and leadership, especially in health and social care workforces and organisations.

Mā te huruhuru, ka rere te manu

Adorn the manu so it can truly soar

This whakatauki defines much of what I believe in, and in some way is the motivation for what I do. In all places, defining moments, and experiences – that Māori have fought, resisted and succumbed to the various challenges and struggles transcends the most important question in my role:

In the simplest of Māori terms: Will it benefit & strengthen Māori?

This has led me to drive important kaupapa such as Māori health and social workforce development, Māori organisation advancement, antiracism, Māori nursing workforce development and Māori suicide prevention.
