Māori Media Summit
In December 2021, Te Rau Ora hosted a Māori Media Summit for Māori Broadcasting and Media Networks. The Summit included participation and presentations from Tahu FM, Aukahu News, Waatea News, Turanga Media FM, Te Korimako o Taranaki Te Reo o Te Uru, Māori Television and MAI FM.
Iwi and Māori radio stations today comprise a vibrant and innovative place within the broadcasting landscape and play a vital role among Māori communities in supporting an authentic Māori narrative.
Over the years, Iwi and Māori radio has proven to be the foundation stone for developing the journalism and broadcasting skills of young Māori professionals. With the advent of the Māori Television Service and the growth of the New Zealand film industry, many who began in radio have now developed new career paths in film and television.
Iwi and Māori radio have also played a significant role in Māori communities, and in some areas is the only radio station that local listeners can access. The stations play a pivotal role in community engagement, keeping the local community advised of relevant pānui and upcoming events.
Presentations throughout the Summit highlighted the significant work undertaken by Iwi and Māori Radio stations throughout COVID-19. The stations highlighted a broad range of regional and local initiatives including (1) local news (2) information on COVID-19 vaccinations and testing centres (3) campaigns to increase local vaccination rates and (4) promotions for local services and support.
Te Rau Ora is committed to a strong partnership with Māori Broadcast and Māori Radio. We will continue to collaborate with these groups to create an authentic Māori narrative that resonates with our whānau and communities.
